A good floor varnish should not scratch if you drag heavy furniture on it, but you'll need at least three coats to get that kind of durability. Furniture pedestals and other furniture parts exerting pressure onto the floor should be protected with felt pads (they should not be fixed with nails). Always lift up the furniture rather than dragging it across the room.
