Three Decades Of Tear-Dropped Characters

The Precious Moments collection is a religious-based product line of miniature dolls that accommodates a wide range of holidays and occasions. The company continues to shine in the face of adversity, after overcoming several corporate changes and business obstacles. The collection is a celebration of life, love and joy. Each piece is produced to embrace human emotion and to reflect the emotional interpretation of its creator.

Samuel Butcher, the creator of Precious Moments, began drawing in childhood. His illustrations were featured on record and book covers before establishing his own greeting card business with friend and partner, Bill Biel. The cards featured children with eyes shaped like teardrops, marking the beginning of the Precious Moments characters. It was at this time that the Jesus Loves Me boy and girl dolls were created.

Amid several changes in business name and structure, only nine more Precious Moments dolls were released over a three-year period. The company closed for the year that followed and re-opened in 1989, producing several select dolls, as well as the re-release of the Jesus Loves Me boy and girl.

Over the years, the Precious Moments product line has expanded to include plush and vinyl dolls. The collection showcases the tear-dropped children that Samuel Butcher first conceptualized, through a variety of product lines, such as ornaments, books, and Precious Paws animals. One very special component of Precious Moments is the Disney Showcase, featuring popular, Disney characters that have been modified to reflect the unmistakeable look of the collection.

Samuel Butchers artistic ideas are renowned worldwide. The Precious Moments Park, located in Carthage, Missouri, consists of a chapel, visitor centre and gift shop, as well as magnificent grounds and gardens. The chapel, inspired by the Sistine Chapel, was constructed to allow Butcher to share his love of God and religion with the world. Located within the park is the largest Precious Moments store in the world, often visited by avid collectors who wish to purchase exclusive items. The park hosts a variety of events each year, including official figurine releases, club meetings and tournaments.

In recent years, the Precious Moments company has expanded to other avenues. Bank of America offers a Precious Moments Mastercard and Deposits Program, as well as a partnering relationship with Enfamil. A website called PreciousMoms provides a place for mothers to connect, seek advice and access valuable tools.

The official Precious Moments Collectors Club offers exclusive figurines, a one-year subscription to Moments magazine, access to the collectors only area of the website, and more. The Fun Club, created for younger collectors, provides much of the same perks, fine-tuned to children, at a lesser cost.
