The Gamers Dream Job - Common Misconceptions of Video Game Testing

Video game testing is a bona fide job. You need to be a professional, even more so than coat and tie jobs. But if you are a true enthusiast of video games, it can be a fun way to make a living. Your job is really all about finding glitches and potentially awkward scenarios in the games you test.

The First Misconception:

Video testing pays $200 an hour. This is not true at all. Most scammers in the industry claim that you can make that kind of money. However, $10 to $15 an hour is a much more reasonable wage for a beginning game tester. Veteran game testers are paid at about $80 an hour.

The Second Misconception:

Any kid who likes video games can be hired to test video games. Again, this is totally fictitious. Due to labor laws, game companies will hire only people 18 years old or older. Consequently, they only provide work for adults over the age of 18.

The Third Misconception:

You only need to play through the game and then send your opinion. Actually, testers must play each game over and over in order to find bugs, glitches, and inconsistencies in the game. The game company will send instructions with each game that should be reviewed carefully so that you can include all required information in your report.

The Fourth Myth:

In order to be a game tester you need a college degree and first-rate computer skills. Computer savvy, maybe, but a high educational attainment, not so much.

As far as being computer savvy goes, all you really need is to be competent when using the computer. Unless you are one of those people that constantly calls tech support, you should be fine.

No college degree is necessary for this job. Familiarity in either console or PC gaming, combined with a talent for noticing details, will be the two skills that serve you best when trying to land one of these jobs.

Video game testing is a fairly new field in the gaming community. Every experienced gamer has an equal opportunity to become a game tester, provided they meet the other requirements mentioned here. Just take things step by step, and you may find yourself advancing to the next level: professional game testing! Video game testing can be enjoyable and rewarding for passionate gamers, but be careful for scams and myths surrounding the industry.
