The state unclaimed money amount in the United States of America is billions but the specific dollar amount of lost cash being held by the states is difficult to establish. National estimates say that the total is over $10 billion in unclaimed state money and some figures are as high as $45 billion. These figures also state over 26 million Americans have unclaimed state money or property owed them which they have no idea about.

Whether or not you get the slightest inkling that you may be owed unclaimed money there is a chance there is some state lost money that is rightfully yours, there are tools out there to help you find it.

To search for and uncover unclaimed state money, you will need to look separately with each state where money may be held. Most states have websites that will help you in your search. If they don’t, you will have to contact the state unclaimed property administrators office.

Be patient and careful in your search – the databases of unclaimed state money will contain information as received from the company or agency that was unable to make the payment and there may be spelling errors in the names and addresses. If you are able to locate unclaimed state money that belongs to you or an inheritance that you are entitled to, the websites will guide you in the procedure for making the claim.
