Should I Purchase a Mechanical Press or Hydraulic Press?

One of the biggest advantages of a hydraulic press over its mechanical counterpart is that a hydraulic press has a unique ability to provide full tonnage (or pressing power) throughout the entire range of the stroke. Mechanical presses usually only apply full force near the end of the stroke. This allows for much more flexibility with a hydraulic press.

As a hydraulic press owner, you will also enjoy increased customization in configuration and operation. Mechanical presses tend to offer only standard sized beds and tonnage. In contrast, a hydraulic press can be easily customized for a customers needs - whether it is a large bed with low tonnage - or the opposite - a small bed with high tonnage. This is important for highly customized jobs and special needs.

Customization also extends to areas that require job-by-job basis customization. As an operator uses a hydraulic press and becomes intimately familiar with its details, they can adjust tonnage and reduce ram movement that might be unnecessary. From PCs to PLC control systems, hydraulic presses have virtually limitless control options. This allows hydraulic presses to perform a wide range of jobs, store settings, and allow for precise pressure and positioning throughout the RAM force and even direction can be controlled.

Hydraulic presses provide the largest amount of pressure for the amount of space they take up to operate. Some estimates claim that hydraulic presses take up half the space a mechanical press would for the same amount of tonnage capacity.

Because of a hydraulic press ability to have almost exact control over the direction and amount of pressure means that the actual products produced by the press are often of higher quality and precision than their mechanically produced competitors.

Whichever press you ultimately decide to purchase, it is important that it fit your needs precisely. Definitely do your homework, make a list of your requirements, and dont be afraid to ask the tough questions.
