Rueda as teaching tool

Casineros/as,

Some of you out there may question the practicality of utilizing the Rueda as an instructional tool. Many slot dancers and even recovering slot dancers are under the impression that the Rueda is no more than a novelty, to engage in only once you have exhausted all of your patented 'sexy moves' and matrix flavored turn patterns. As usual, we beg to differ.

Thinking Outside The Slot: Why Rueda Works

Since we assume most of our dancing outside of class will be one-on-one, and since we "train as we dance", why learn in a Rueda? This was actually a very good question posed to us by a student who we will not name for their own safety.

From an instructors point of view it makes perfect sense. We need a way for our students to switch partners frequently and fluidly without stopping the "groove". It is imperative that you get a feel for as many different people as possible while developing your lead/follow. In a Rueda, it's as simple as calling "Dame" or "Enchufla" or any of the various moves that involve a partner exchange. Problem solved.

For those who have problems hearing the music, it is far more difficult to get off beat during a Rueda than it is in a one-on-one dance. The collective "groove" of the circle helps to keep students on beat. Falling off from time to time is inevitable, but the unity of the Rueda offers great damage control.

The group dynamic of the Rueda offers a much warmer learning climate to those who are just learning how to dance. You are no longer dancing with just your partner, you are dancing with an entire group of people who are simultaneously trying to surmount the same difficulties of learning a new move as you. There is something implicitly powerful about the phenomenon that results when a group of people, separate but equal, work together to solve a common problem. Sometimes I believe Western culture can be too focused on the individual and can lose sight of the this "collective wholeness".

The Rueda also works well from a students point of view. We all get a little impatient sometimes. If your current partner is struggling and annoying you (god forbid) rest assured he/she will only be with you for a very short time before moving on to the next partner. For the person who is struggling, this new partner may be more patient and willing to help, hopefully. Everyone wins.

Very few turn patterns cannot be used in a one-on-one dance directly or with a simple modification such as holding on to your partner's hand instead of releasing it and moving on. With the exception of the Dame family and a few other patterns scattered here and there, the material we teach functions interchangeably in both one-on-one and group scenarios. And unlike some dance schools in Miami, you will never be charged extra for separate classes which "teach" you how to dance one-on-one. This is a ridiculous concept indeed.

When you think about it, our original assertion of dancing more one-on-one than in a Rueda may be falling apart little by little in the post-Paso era. In fact, I find myself dancing in a Rueda almost as much as with a single partner! Some of our newer students who have been hitting the nightclubs with us may be inclined to agree.

We failed to mention the fun factor. Since this is the obvious, we will avoid restating it.

No matter what, we are here to prepare Paso students for dancing in various configurations, be it Rueda, one-on-one, or even triples in the future. Flexibility within a Casino framework is what we strive to bring you. Above all, please think OUTSIDE the slot.
