Methods to Treat Allergic Reactions

If you are a sufferer of allergies then you know that when it come to the methods used to treat allergic reactions, some of them are just as uncomfortable as the reactions themselves. The many ways to treat allergic reactions are dependent on the allergy itself. The methods used to treat allergic reactions for food allergies are not the same as the methods used to treat allergic reactions for environmental allergies such as pets, pollen and dust.

The most common types of food allergies in North America are shellfish, nuts, eggs, strawberries and chocolate. Chocolate is generally not as common of an allergy in North America as the other listed food allergies, and the methods used to treat allergic reactions to chocolate are usually the same ones used to treat environmental allergies which include the use of antihistamines. An allergic reaction to chocolate is generally very mild and is usually not a reaction to chocolate itself but to some other component used in the making of the chocolate.

Food allergies are very difficult to treat. The reason for this is that the allergy is so fast acting once the trigger has been encountered. The methods used to treat allergic reactions to food are not readily available in the general environment. Most sufferers of food allergies keep a supply of the medications used to treat allergic reactions to food with them always. These methods to treat allergic reactions generally include adrenaline, epinephrine or injectable Benedryl, depending on the severity of the allergic reaction that the person has. The use of adrenaline to treat allergic reactions is primarily for those types of reactions that can lead to anaphylactic shock, or the shutting down of respiratory system due to the swelling of the airway. This type of allergic reaction is most often associated with shellfish, strawberries and nuts (to a lesser degree). To treat allergic reactions form these triggers using adrenaline, the adrenaline is injected into a main artery either in the arm, leg, crotch or chest. Even after the sufferer has stabilized it is necessary for them to seek immediate medical assistance in order to use other medications to fully treat allergic reactions from these triggers. Epinephrine and injectable Benedryl are used in the same way but usually after the sufferer has stabilized they can return home to rest comfortably until the rest of the symptoms pass as for the most part no further action is needed to treat allergic reactions at that severity level other than the main method to treat allergic reactions that they have already used.

Methods used to treat allergic reactions that are environmental in nature such as pets, pollen, dust and some chemical fumes are generally available over the counter. These methods used to treat allergic reactions are usually based on epinephrine and Benedryl or some derivative of these drugs and work by blocking histamines, thereby allowing them to be termed antihistamines. These products may have some side effects and should be used very carefully and only under the advice of a physician.
