How to Cut Car Insurance: 6 Ways to Decrease Auto Insurance

When buying a new car, you can no longer just look at the monthly payment, you also have to figure in the costs of insurance. If you have a nicer vehicle it likely means that you will be paying more on your auto insurance premiums. Other factors that affect your insurance premiums are how many miles you drive each year, where you live, your credit rating, and of course your driving record. Below are a few ways that you can lower the expense on your auto insurance.

1. Right now, many insurance companies are giving incentives to start sending automatic payments, whether this is through a credit card or directly pulled from your bank account. You can cut off $5.00 a month or more, at many insurance companies simply by setting up an automated system of payment. This eliminates the hassle of mailing a check each month as well.

2. If you have multiple vehicles in your household, consider carrying them all on the same policy. You will likely find that your insurance company would be more than happy to insure all of your vehicles, especially if you have a good track record.

3. Combine your home, auto, and/or renters insurance. Like owning multiple vehicles, having one company provide all your insurance needs will more than likely result in savings.

4. Ask if you qualify for any discounts. Some companies won't automatically notify you or reduce your premiums if you qualify. You have to ask. For example: some companies will reduce premiums for your teenager if they've taken a safe driver course or achieve a certain grade point average, but you may not know that until you ask.

5. Do some research on how much it would cost for you to be insured by another company. If the rate is lower, tell your current company what the rate is and ask if they'll match it. You may be surprised at how quickly they say yes. It's always cheaper for them to satisfy a current customer than to have to find a new customer.

6.. Decrease how much you drive. This is a longer term strategy. Insurance companies look at how much you've driven in the past and use that as the basis for how much you'll drive in the future. So while it may not result in an immediate cost savings, decreasing mileage should result in lower payments in the future. Take public transportation to work, carpool to the kid's activities, combine errands and do them all in the same trip.
