How Low Vision Aids Improve The Patients' Daily Activities

These low vision aids are means of assisting patients in maintaining a normal daily activity. Unlike the common glasses, they are not a means of correcting one's visual problem. These low visual aids are aimed at providing a chance for visually disabled persons to have a normal daily existence.

Low visual aids is a somewhat general terminology that comprises a variety of devices aimed to help the visually impaired. The most requested low visual aids are braille phones, different computer software, telescopes (devices that improve distance vision) or bioptics (a special pair of glasses with a telescope attached to either one or both lenses).

Braille phones are specially designed for people with increased visual and auditive difficulties. New generations of modern braille phones have a large display with clearly-written numbers, as well as their transcription in the Braille alphabet. Other advantage in using these phones is that they usually come with a sound adjustment system that allows the user to control the volume of the ring tone. A major benefit of these braille phones is that the users can attach an amplified ringer which also has a stroboscopic light. It is attached to the phone line and detects all incoming calls, signalizing them with a strobe, thus making them impossible to miss.

Besides braille phones, another spearheading device in the area of low vision aids is the Visio Voice, a low vision and blindness software for Macintosh. It is a program that transforms text files into audio files. It is accessible in a wide variety of languages and it is easy to use by visually impaired persons due to its accessible interface, including large cursors and powerful zoom.

Low vision aids seem to be the most appropriate modern solution for people with visual difficulties. Although highly recommended by ophthalmologists, they are but a means of improving patients' lives. They do not correct their medical conditions, but neither do they aggravate them. In a modern communication-based society, these low vision aids are an important help for the visually impaired.
