Getting Through Your First Wine Tasting Party in One Piece.

Observe and Study The Wine
There are 2 methods to pick up the wine glass, check below on how to achieve this:

If you’re drinking a chilled wine, don’t hold the bowl of the glass, you must hold it by the stem.
When you are drinking a wine served at room temperature – hold the glass by lifting it it between your two central fingers now the bowl should sits on your palm.

Now that you have the glass of wine comfortably in your hand, search for something white and put the glass of wine at an angle in front of it. Stretch out your glass of wine to arms length, but take care not the spill the wine! This is will not be a great. You may need to change the distance you hold the wine at due to your personal eyesight.

This is the time where you can examine the wine, here you are studying the clarity and colour of the wine. Wine comes in many colours and not the pink, red and white, by studying the colour you should be able to see that wines can be many other colours. We all should know that the grape determines the colour of a wine, if you are eager to impress anyone I would not go around shouting this out as the extent of your knowledge, but if you’re in a group of wine novices you could throw it into discussion.

Clarity indicates age. A newer wine will usually show as quite clear, if a wine is seen to be cloudy this can indicate a problem with the wine and I suggest you don’t drink it. Studying the clarity of the wine does not have any influence on the taste, but any great wine lover will always enjoy the beauty of the wine as well as its taste.

The wines odour and how to smell a wine.
You should still have the glass of wine held in the way we described earlier, firstly you should swirl the wine, rotate your hand slightly so that the wine swirls around the wine glass, be safe as to not to splatter the wine. You should find it very easy to swirl the wine, you won’t have to be vigorous with the glass, slight movement will achieve what you want.

The plan behind all this swirling is to lift the wine's fragrance out of the wine altogether and into the empty part of the glass thus allowing it to be smelled and savored. Move your glass of wine to your nose as graciously as you're able and bring it in slightly below the tip. Inhale deeply. Wait for a few moments and then inhale again. It's a good idea to exhale after those 2 inhalations or you might find yourself going wobbly.

When you savor the wine and converse about the fragrance, remember to be truthful with what you can smell, you may be surprised to find you can smell things like liquorice, flowers or pears, if you can be truthful you will enjoy the party more.

Now For Tasting

The actual drinking is the part we all enjoy, remember that it is all about sipping and savoring the wine, rather than gulping down huge mouthfuls. At any wine tasting event you could be tasting up to 10 wines, so its important to enjoy and take your time.

Drink some of the wine, don’t gulp it, only put a tiny bit of wine into your mouth. Now close your mouth and move the wine inside your mouth and tongue to release the taste, you can either drink the wine or spit the wine out, if you swallow exhale at the same moment. Now you should be able to have the full taste of the wine, again be courageous and tell everyone what you can taste: dryness and if you enjoyed it.

That’s all there is to it, this is not going to make you a wine expert overnight, but it may get you through your first wine tasting party, if this is sounds like your idea of hell, let me tell you that 2 years ago I would have agreed, but once you try it you will never see wine in the same way.
