The term ‘ladyboy’ is very popular in South East Asia and it refers to a transgender person. This can also mean an effeminate gay male. This term is very common in Thailand and it is of Thai origin. It is a direct translation of the Thai term ‘Kathoey’ which is used to refer male-to-female transgender person. This term is often confused with transvestites. But, the term Kathoey or ‘ladyboy’ does not simply mean a transvestite but a transgender male.
Very often ladyboys are pushed into prostitution because of their feminine qualities and the social discrimination that blocks them from taking other jobs. They are not only found in Thailand, they are found in all parts of the world.
The world looked at ‘ladyboys’ with contempt. However, no one embraces this condition as a matter of personal choice. None of them wanted to be a ‘ladyboy’. It is not their mistake because we call something as mistake or wrong only when it involves personal will and personal choice. They are born that way with certain hormonal deficiency which leads them eventually to seek for a gender change surgery. Here, there is no question of personal will as they have not opted to be a transgender person.
Fortunately, the social stigma against ‘ladyboys’ is changing gradually. The society has started accepting them as they are. They are being treated with dignity. Unlike before they have social status today like everyone else. The changing social response makes ‘Ladyboys’ to accept themselves. They are becoming more and more aware that there is nothing wrong in being a ‘Ladyboy’ and there is nothing to be ashamed of. They do not lead a hidden life anymore. They are more and more visible in the society. This is very true in the case of Thailand. The Thai culture is very accommodative of ‘Ladyboys’ and they are well accepted. They take up jobs like anyone else and they are most often found in feminine jobs.

Ladyboy dating sites list profiles of ladyboys who become their member and who want their profile to be displayed for other ladyboys to find them and date with them. This is a great improvement on the way ladyboys looked at themselves and the way the society looked at them. Ladyboys never wanted to be known publicly about their orientation. By becoming a member of ladyboy dating sites they are ready to open up to the world. They even have their photos displayed in the dating sites.
However, we still have to go a long way in terms of changes in legal aspects of this issue. A transgender person is not allowed to change their legal sex in Thailand. There are places that still show discrimination. What the society has to realize and appreciate is that Ladyboys too are normal human beings with normal feelings. Rather than looking at them as a different class of people, working with this issue out at individual levels will prove to be a more successful model that elicits acceptance in the society.
