E-learning through a Learning Management System

The introduction of the Internet and the advancement of related technologies as well as the dominance of personal computers in almost every field of human activity has made its entry into the academic zone and a novel idea has been brought in. This most recent innovation is called e-learning or online learning and it is available to everyone in search of knowledge and having a computer with an internet connection; the most widely used tool being the Learning Management System or simply the LMS as it is often referred to as.

The LMS entails learning by interacting with well qualified teachers online as also with one’s fellow students at times convenient to the learner. At the end of the successful completion of the course, online degrees are awarded. Unlike the conventional education system wherein knowledge is passed on to students through a manual process, interaction in a Learning Management System is based on a method which allows knowledge to be transferred by way of documents, videos, links and other kinds of files. All these features contribute greatly in making online learning a great experience.

There are a lot of LMSs available in the market and are quite popular. Where adaptability is concerned, the Learning Management System can function effectively in any teaching or learning environment and there are some features that reflect its mode of operation. These cover themes and tools besides study groups and other rights.

For some time it was thought that the LMS had at least one shortcoming; that it was not able to offer the advantages of online learning to the disabled aspirants. But the Learning Management System available today even lets the disabled candidates in reaping the benefits of online learning. Besides, it offers teachers and students several courses for professional enhancement.

An individual’s capabilities which are confirmed through his or her knowledge, abilities and skills can play a role in improving his or her performance which in turn will lead to higher success for individual as well as the organization. In a Learning Management System or LMS, each individual’s competencies or skills are mapped against those required for the job role and training is provided for the gaps found while constantly monitoring the progress.

The Learning Management System is basically a software program for delivering knowledge and content, tracking the progress of the learner and managing the assessments. A complete LMS not only tracks the online learning the learner is present at but it also keeps a track of any physical learning he might attend. The systems which are more dynamic will have the learners Key Performance Indicators or KPI also incorporated in it.

Companies who can afford it can make use of the Learning Management System to automate the learning process and efficiently manage each training program. The greatest advantage of the LMS is that it monitors the progress of the learner sending reminders to him or her to complete certain programs which are applicable to his or her work requirements.
