This is used to treat depression and similar psychological disorders. When ingested, Prozac increases the amount of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a molecule that commands the body’s brain processes. The brain sends messages that the body is tired, hungry, or sleepy, and even depressed. Prozac reinforces serotonin levels in the brain by going to the serotonin receptors in the hypothalamus, midbrain, cortex, and cerebellum.

People trying to lose weight or downplay physical pain, excessive appetites, and sexual activities take Prozac. Those who cannot control their aggression, impulsivity, and irritability find the drug helpful. But can smokers stop smoking with Prozac?

Antidepressant Drugs and Smoking

Smokers puff the lethal smoke to get a kick. The brain is stimulated to produce opoids which increase positive feelings. The chemical inducement of nicotine is similar to the effect of opium and morphine on the brain. Smoking also increases the flow of dopamine, another chemical in the brain that contributes to the feeling of well-being and emotional balance. Dopamine and opoids set to work when nicotine goes to the brain. The more cigarettes smoked, the more receptors are activated.

After smoking, smokers feel good, relaxed, less nervous, and cravings for nicotine is reduced for the time being compared to the agitation before they smoked a cigarette. Nicotine gets attached to the opoid receptors like cocaine and heroine. Nicotine, an addictive substance in cigarettes drives smokers to smoke themselves to an early grave. The need to smoke is an impulse sent by the brain.

People trying to quit smoking take Prozac to dull the cravings for nicotine. However, there is no uniform effectiveness of Prozac on individuals, when it comes to nicotine withdrawal. There are even cases that the medication worsens the withdrawal symptoms when they try to stop smoking with Prozac.

Who Should Not Take Prozac?

Prozac is not for everybody. People who have exhibited allergies to any of its components should avoid the drug. Doctors will be careful about dispensing the drug to those taking antipsychotic medications.

The use of Prozac with other prescription and non-prescription medications should be discussed with your doctor. The doctor should also know if you have diabetes, liver disease, and other medical problems. Women should be careful about using Prozac. They should inform the doctor if they are nursing, pregnant, or planning to get pregnant. If rashes or hives develop after taking Prozac, inform the doctor immediately without fail. This could be a symptom of a serious medical ailment.

Stop Smoking with Prozac

Prozac offers hope to those who tried everything else to quit smoking but failed. There are smokers who take endless drags of cigarette smoke to feel better. Now they can stop smoking. With Prozac, hopeless smokers can have a chance.

Smoking cessation will vary from person to person. Expectations to stop smoking with Prozac should be realistic and closely supervised by a physician. No one should make the mistake of self medicating with the drug.

There is no miracle cure for any addiction. The cure goes with an iron will. The process of kicking the habit is not easy. Many smokers have relapsed, even with Prozac. It’s really all up to you.
