Whilst nobody ever hopes for the worst, it sometimes serves to expect it. From the boy scouts to the proverbial old wives’ warnings, such as ‘always be prepared’ and ‘the early bird catches the worm’ are still maxims still muttered, and relevant today. And whilst shoring up against potential accidents or disasters might seem like a conservatively superstitious thing to do, they can actually prove to be great time-and-money savers in the long term.

For example, home insurance is one band of self-protection which is often overlooked in favour of the more widely-advertised areas of car and travel insurance, yet it is nonetheless important. Whilst we do not expect every home to collapse within our tenancy, nor do most people have the social prejudice severe enough to suspect anyone and everyone of trying to break in and commit robbery, there are always exceptions to the rule. And insurance is all about being prepared for those exceptions.

Home insurance is made further obscure because it is generally split into two parts, as you might imagine: contents cover, and building cover. This is particularly relevant to those renting a property: for the current tenants, contents cover is a responsibility, as the house is filled with their possession; whereas in contrast the building cover should be handled by the permanent landlord, who maintains the rights to the house itself.

If, alternatively, you are a home-owner and the resident of said building, you need to get the two together: and most easily, this would occur through the same provider. Indeed, several insurance companies offer large discounts if you purchase building and contents cover simultaneously from them. Reliable and recognisable high street banks such as Alliance and Leicester will offer 50% off contents cover if you buy contents and building cover together: good news if you are the kind of home-owner with an expensive technology habit and possess quality computers, televisions, or kitchen devices.

Whether you are moving in for the year or buying the house forever, it does pay to get your insurance sorted out sooner rather than later. Before you buy, put your details through an online quote generator. Whilst insurance often gets a bad reputation for being all payment and no pay-off, you might actually find yourself pleasantly surprised.
