If you have been studying foreign exchange for even a day I am certain you have come across a forex ea by now. Also known as an expert advisor or forex robot this tiny piece of automated trading software can do you wonders. Just so we are on the same page before we continue, you do need to know that these automated robots are not get rich quick machines.

A forex ea is fundamentally a manual trading method automated into a piece of software. Once installed we can drop the program right into our Metatrader platform. Depending on the programming it can do various things. While some may just throw you an alert, the more involved ones can conduct all aspects of your trade.

What makes each of these forex robots different is in the way they are automated to get in and out of the market. Every automated forex robot is great in its capability to take the human emotion factor out of the equation. This is the achilles heel of every novice. The forex ea is software so it is unable to have hunches or guesses. It can only do what it is programmed to do. Now depending on your awareness of the markets this can either be a good thing or a curse.

Where a robot unquestionably excels is in its inherent ability of computing considerable amounts of information and immediately making a decision. We as humans are just not capable to take in and process all of that data and make an accurate decision as quickly.

The expert advisor continually calculates market information and waits for a preprogrammed position to open or close a trade. Problems can come up however when your broker catches on to what you are doing or when the criteria the software uses to trade no longer applies in the market.

Make sure you do your research before purchasing a forex ea. While there are lucrative expert advisors a bulk of them are useless. Always remember to test out your new robot on a demo account first before letting it trade with real money.

If you start getting decent at forex and developing your own strategy there is a lot of information out there on creating your own robot. The benefit in programming your own forex ea is once again taking the emotion aspect and human error out of the equation. The software will trade based on its precise programming of market signs.

Computers are extremely powerful and so is automating forex trading but there is not one robot out there that will make you wealthy overnight. They are only as competent as the trader who designed them and as the market changes the robot may grow to be outdated. With that said I still believe every trader should have an expert advisor in their repertoire.
